Home to some of the greatest wonders of the world, Egypt requires thinking of in terms of millenia. There has not been a single monolithic Egyptian system, but it has gone through profound changes over time. Even today, the manner in which modern Egypt has melded with the ancient world is positively astounding. One cannot help but notice that the pull of the ancient world is still very much a part of modern cities such as Cairo and Alexandria.
Cairo is an amazing city of life and movement, with the noisy honking of horns, children playing in the streets and merchants selling their wears, among ancient temples, tombs, Christian Churches, Muslim monuments, museums, etc. At the very edge of the city, you may witness the majestic Great Pyramids of Giza and not far from there the amazing Sphinx.
A first time visitor to Egypt who wants a classical experience would do well to do a Nile Cruise. Nile cruises often visit a wider variety of antiquities along the banks of the river. But equally important, they also allow tourists to gain a prospective of the rural Egypt, where people live much the same way they did even thousands of years ago. It is a wonderful experience to sit on a shaded deck of a floating hotel, sipping an iced beverage while watching 5,000 years of culture slowly drift by.
Other attractions include the Valley of the King, the Karnak Temple, the Luxor Temple at Luxor or Elephantine Island, Kitchener’s Island, Nubian village at Aswan.
There is also something for ocean lovers and beach goers. Along the Red Sea Coast, lies Hurghada, which until a few years ago, was a small fishing village. Today, it has gone on to become the foremost tourist resort of the Red Sea Coast and an international center for aquatic sports.
Across the Gulf of Suez is the simplicity of sun, sea and sand of Sharm El Sheikh. The luxury of resort hotels, water sports, shopping and entertainment on the Sinai Peninsula, where Moses wrong the Ten Commandments on its highest mountain, Mt. Sinai. This city offers diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, water sports, horse and camel riding, desert safaris, quad biking at daylight and casinos, night clubs, chilling spots at Na’ama Bay at night. It is almost impossible for anyone to ever suffer from boredom.
Alexandria, founded by Alexander The Great in 331 BC, has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern. Its ambience and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is only 225km from Cairo.
